NILAI — National track cycling queen Nurul Izzah Mohd Asri showcased her dominance by breaking the Asian record in the women’s 1-kilometre time trial, securing her second gold medal at the 2025 Asian Track Cycling Championships (ATC) at the National Velodrome today.
In the final, Izzah clocked 1 minute 6.229 seconds, shattering the previous Asian record of 1:07.137, which she had set earlier in the qualifying round.
The silver medal went to China’s Luo Shuyan, who recorded 1:07.365, while South Korea’s Hwang Hyeongso settled for bronze with a time of 1:07.690.
The 22-year-old Sungai Petani-born cyclist was elated with her achievement, especially as this was the first time the event was contested at the ATC.
“I’m very happy, not just for winning gold but also for breaking the Asian record. This is a meaningful moment for me. I will continue striving to improve my performance,” she told reporters after wrapping up her ATC campaign, Bernama reported.
Izzah’s gold today brings her total haul at ATC 2025 to two golds, one silver, and one bronze, following her success in the keirin, team sprint, and individual sprint events.
It was not just Izzah who impressed, as Malaysia’s junior track cycling squad also made an impact, with Intan Nur Irdrisha Abdul Razak clinching bronze in the elimination race.
The gold medal went to Taiwan’s Wen Xin Huang, while Japan’s Yuka Nishihara took silver.
Malaysia’s para track cycling team also made their mark, sweeping three gold medals today.
Mohd Khairul Hazwan Wahab and his pilot Muhammad Khairul Adha Rasol triumphed in the 1 km time trial for the men’s tandem B category, while Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin (C1) and Ahmad Zharif Ahmad Nazri (C5) also delivered gold for Malaysia. — February 26, 2025
