KUALA LUMPUR — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has dismissed referee Fitri Maskon from all refereeing duties following his subpar performance in the 2024/2025 MFL League match between Negeri Sembilan FC and Selangor FC on Thursday.
FAM deputy president Datuk S Sivasundaram said the decision was made after thorough discussions with the association’s top leadership.
“Although this firm decision was made with a heavy heart, it should serve as a lesson to all referees.
“This is the first time a referee has been sacked, as previous disciplinary actions only involved suspensions.
“It sends a clear message that referees need to be more serious when carrying out their responsibilities on the field,” he said in a statement to the media today.
Sivasundaram added that, based on the match commissioner’s report, Fitri’s poor officiating had affected the outcome of the match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi.
FAM’s Referee Unit also reviewed the match and concluded that Fitri’s decision to award a penalty was inaccurate.
“The analysis further revealed that the 15 minutes of added time at the end of the match was excessive, altering what should have been a draw into a different result.
“This clearly shows that the referee’s decisions had a direct and significant impact on the final score,” he said.
For the record, Selangor won the Under-23 (U-23) league match 2-1. — February 17, 2025
