KUALA LUMPUR — Fresh off a national record-breaking run in the men’s indoor 60 metres at the Tiger Paw Invitational in California, Malaysian sprint prodigy Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi is brimming with confidence as he sets his sights on even greater feats this season.

The 21-year-old United States-based athlete stormed through the semi-finals with a 6.60 seconds finish, shaving two-hundredths of a second off his previous record of 6.62s, set at the same meet in 2023.

Now, with momentum on his side, he is hungry for more—specifically, smashing his own men’s 100m national record next.

“This (new 60m national record) makes me so happy right now. I feel confident and positive heading into the season,” said the Auburn University sprinter in a video shared by the Malaysia Athletics Federation on Facebook.

“The goal is to stay healthy, keep the momentum going until my next outdoor meet so that I could clock another personal best in the men’s 100m. Hopefully another national record can be broken.”

Azeem currently holds the men’s 100m national record of 10.09s, set during the 2022 Under-20 World Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games bronze medallist also took a moment to acknowledge the unwavering support from Malaysian fans, saying their encouragement fuels his drive to make the country proud. — February 16, 2025
