KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian diving technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas has confirmed that Datuk Pandelela Rinong and Nur Dhabitah Sabri are still part of the national diving programme, despite their absences from early competition planning this year.

Speaking to Scoop, Bryan explained that Pandelela will focus solely on major events such as the World Cup series, World Championships, and SEA Games.

This year, Pandelela is only expected to start competing internationally in April.

Meanwhile, Dhabitah is still on a break after her last appearance at the Malaysia Open in 2024.

Bryan noted that Pandelela, 31, performs better with extended recovery periods. This was evident when the two-time Olympic medallist achieved a score exceeding 300 points for the first time in two years during last year’s national trials.

She capped off her season with a gold medal in the women’s 10m platform event at the Malaysia Open Diving Championships.

“Last year, we observed that Pandelela peaks when she participates in fewer competitions. This allowed her to score over 300 points after a two-year gap,” said Bryan.

“Our strategy moving forward is to prioritise key events, enabling her to plan and prepare more effectively while focusing on recovery. Additionally, she has already met the minimum qualification score (MQS).

“For divers who have yet to meet the MQS, they will head to New Zealand later this month to compete in the Southern Cross Diving Series,” he added.

Bryan also addressed the status of Dhabitah, who reached the women’s 3m springboard final at the 2024 Paris Olympics and secured three gold medals at the Malaysia Open.

“She remains on a break, and we are uncertain when she will return, but she is still part of the national programme,” Bryan reassured.

Looking ahead, Bryan emphasised the need for better structures and development at state levels. He also highlighted the importance of improving the mental resilience of national divers and fostering confidence in the management team.

“A number of podium and backup divers were dropped from the national team due to poor performances and discipline issues,” he revealed.

“These are young athletes, and I want them to understand that a strong mentality is crucial for success in this sport,” Bryan concluded. – January 9, 2025
