KUALA LUMPUR – Jerry Gan, a National Sports Institute (NSI) staff member, is facing potential suspension from the organisation if found guilty of charges related to a betting scandal.

NSI chief executive officer Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli confirmed that an internal inquiry has been launched following the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) decision on November 15 to suspend Jerry and former national shuttler Liew Daren for their involvement in betting.

“Yes, we are aware of the charge and have started the internal inquiry process according to NSI procedure after the verdict by BWF on November 15, 2024. He’s no longer working with the national badminton team since January 2024,” said Faedzal.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Jerry remains an employee of the NSI, though he has not been attached to the Badminton Association of Malaysia since early this year.

Further actions against Jerry will depend on the outcome of the internal inquiry. It is also learned that the NSI board, chaired by Datuk Marina Chin, is still awaiting a detailed report from the inquiry.

Earlier, it was confirmed that both Jerry and Daren were found guilty of violating the BWF Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, with bets placed on international badminton matches over a period spanning from 2018 to 2022. – December 21, 2024
