KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles head coach Tan Bin Shen will officially leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on January 13, after nearly four years of service.
Bin Shen, who joined BAM in 2020, played a pivotal role in the development of Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
The duo made history in 2022 by becoming the first Malaysian badminton pair to be crowned world champions, just a year after winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
They further solidified their legacy by defending their bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in August.
Reflecting on his tenure, Bin Shen said, “It has been a fulfilling journey working with the men’s doubles team. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I look forward to new challenges ahead.”
BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh expressed gratitude for Bin Shen’s contributions, stating, “Bin Shen has made significant contributions to Malaysian badminton, and his commitment to nurturing talent and champions has been invaluable. We are deeply grateful for his hard work and dedication.”
Bin Shen’s coaching tenure coincided with a golden era for Malaysian men’s doubles, as he helped Aaron and Wooi Yik secure historic milestones on the international stage.
In a way, Bin Shen also played a key role in the rise of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who turned professional in September.
BAM has yet to announce a replacement but confirmed that the new head coach for men’s doubles will be revealed soon.
Meanwhile, the governing body wished Bin Shen continued success as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. — December 20, 2024
