Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin defeats former NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail to secure second term as PCM president

KUALA LUMPUR — Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin was reelected as the president of the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) for a second consecutive term during the 25th PCM Annual General Meeting today.

He defeated his challenger, former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, with a 14-10 vote, securing the PCM presidency for the 2025-2028 term.

Megat, who has led PCM since 2019, expressed gratitude for the trust shown by the affiliates and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening PCM through the pledges in his manifesto.

“Alhamdulillah, I will give my best to serve the country. Thank you also to Ahmad Shapawi for contesting.

“I am sure that everyone who contested… there are no winners or losers. What’s important is that our duty after this is to uphold the dignity of this organisation (PCM),” he told a media conference here today.

His manifesto includes plans to provide training programmes for high-performance athletes outside the NSC Podium Programme, attract more international championships, and create passive income to strengthen PCM’s financial resources.

Megat also welcomed Shapawi’s input to further develop para-sports in the country and emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration with the NSC. 

“I greatly respect Ahmad Shapawi because he is like a big brother to me. We will also collaborate more constructively with the NSC,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shapawi wished the new PCM leadership all the best and offered his support, stating he is ready to contribute if his expertise or advice is needed.
