PETALING JAYA – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will have a new president in 2025 after Tan Sri Hamidin Amin decided not to defend the top post in the upcoming election, which will take place during the FAM Congress on February 15.
Hamidin was reelected for the 2021-2025 term uncontested at the 57th FAM Congress.
Today’s announcement by Hamidin confirmed the rumours of him leaving the post after two terms.
“I want to give an opportunity to our members to choose a new leader,” said Hamidin at a press conference after FAM’s 13th executive council meeting for the 2021-2025 term at Wisma FAM here today.
He was first elected as FAM president in 2018, succeeding Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Before that, he was the general secretary of the national football body.
“I have been at the helm of this great association for six and a half years now, and I believe it is time for me to step down.
“I reached this decision some time ago after discussing it with my family. However, as I remain a member of the FIFA Council and the AFC Council, I will continue supporting the national team and FAM with my expertise whenever needed.
“I have full trust in our members and affiliates to select the next person to fill my role. I hope for the best for those contesting the presidential position, and I wish them success in taking our national football team to the next level,” he added.
Hamidin also dismissed suggestions that fan pressure influenced his decision.
“Fans have a right to criticize — I cannot deny that. But this decision is an opportunity for our member associations to choose a new leader through the proper processes.”
During his leadership, the national team qualified on merit for this year’s Asian Cup in Qatar — their first appearance in 43 years — and climbed the FIFA world rankings from 171st to 132nd.
Before becoming president, Hamidin served as FAM vice-president and general secretary.” – December 4, 2024
