KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s uniformed forces may soon be known for more than just safeguarding the nation; they are set to play a role in shaping the country’s future athletes.

In a new initiative, their physical prowess and discipline will be leveraged to nurture national sports talent.

At today’s Cabinet Committee on Sports Development meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a bold decision was made to harness athletic potential within Malaysia’s uniformed forces.

The initiative will focus on building sports talent within units such as the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba).

To widen the net, other uniformed agencies—including the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Malaysian Prisons Department, Malaysia Volunteer Coprs Department (Rela), and Civil Defence Force (APM)—will also join the National Sports Talent Development Programme.

“As decided in the High Level Committee (HLC) meeting held on January 11 to advance the sports industry, a holistic plan needs to be established.

“This initiative is essential to align with current sports demands and to create a more dynamic high-performance sports ecosystem,” said Zahid in a statement issued today.

This partnership will be introduced in stages, with several initiatives aimed at tapping into the sporting potential of these uniformed units.

Steps include providing essential training equipment and access to training facilities, as well as offering coaching and sports science courses to increase the number of certified coaches within the forces.

To foster their growth and competitiveness, local tournaments are planned, along with support for participation in national and international events.

The committee also reviewed proposals to select specific sports for certain agencies: sepak takraw (Bomba and ATM), karate (ATM), boxing and table tennis (ATM), weightlifting (Bomba), and shooting and archery (ATM and PDRM).

“I urge for an integrated collaboration among all parties, including ministries, departments, government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, academics, and the community, to be established in the effort to develop a sports ecosystem.

“This step is crucial for advancing and enhancing Malaysia’s reputation on the world stage in sporting events,” Zahid added — October 28, 2024
