KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah are on the brink of ending their title drought as they storm into the Hong Kong Open final.
In a thrilling display, the duo clinched their spot by toppling the tournament’s top seeds Baek Ha-na and Lee Soo-hee with a nail-biting 22-20, 17-21, 21-15 victory after an intense 74-minute battle.
This marks their second consecutive final appearance, following an impressive run to the Korea Open final just last week.
Ironically, they also overcame Ha-na and Soo-hee in a similar battle last week, only to be denied the title by Jeong Na-un and Kim Hye-jeong in the final.
Their final hurdle tomorrow will be either the tournament’s second seeds from China, Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning, or the Korean duo Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong, who are set to clash in the other semifinal.
The last time Pearly and Thinaah tasted victory and stood atop the podium was at the 2022 French Open.
Therefore, if Pearly and Thinaah triumph in tomorrow’s final, they will etch another milestone in their careers by becoming the first Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair to win this tournament since its inception in 1982. – 14 September 2024
