SEPANG — The Malaysian motorsport community is in mourning following the tragic death of former national racer Elly Idzlianizar Elias.
The 40-year-old, renowned for his achievements in the Cub Prix and international racing circuits, was found dead with multiple stab wounds, reportedly inflicted by a samurai sword.
The incident occurred late last night, around 11:30 p.m., at Taman Behor Gonchar. According to local police, the altercation that led to Elly’s death began when he visited the home of one of the suspects, only to find him absent.
Shortly afterwards, Elly encountered three men at a nearby junction, leading to a confrontation. The dispute escalated violently, with Elly sustaining 10 to 12 stab wounds.
Kangar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop, confirmed that three suspects, aged between 28 and 51, have been arrested. The suspects are in custody under a seven-day remand as the investigation progresses.
Authorities seized a samurai sword, mobile phones, and video recording equipment from the suspects. While the motive remains unclear, police noted that Elly and the suspects were acquainted.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from fellow racers and industry professionals.
Ibrahim Norrodin, a rider for FGRT Project in the 2024 Asia Road Racing Championship, expressed his sorrow.
“I am deeply saddened by Elly’s passing. He was a top rider and an inspiration to many, including myself. I had the privilege of racing alongside him during the era of Hafizh Syahrin, Zaqwan, and Azlan. May Allah bless his soul and grant him peace.”
Che Zamri, a mechanic with Yamaha Teckne Racing Team Asia, reflected on his personal connection with Elly.
“I knew Elly before he became a racer. We were introduced by people from our hometown. After I finished my stint in Cub Prix, we met again, and he was always a humble and talented individual. May Allah ease his journey to the hereafter.”
Shahrol Yuzy, Principal of the Honda Estremo Racing Team, also offered his condolences.
“As a friend and competitor, I am deeply saddened by this news. Elly’s time has come, and all I can do now is offer prayers for him and extend my condolences to his family. Please avoid spreading rumours and allow him to rest in peace.”
Elly was a prominent figure in Malaysian motorsports, competing in prestigious events such as the 125cc World Championship as a wild card rider in 2009 alongside Zulfahmi Khairudin. His passing is a great loss to the racing community, and his contributions will be remembered with deep respect.
