KUALA LUMPUR – As snooker and billiards see a resurgence in popularity among Malaysians, the sports are once again entangled in controversy, this time involving allegations of power abuse by officials within the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF).
Asian-level snooker and billiards referee Muhd Ithmayudin Zulkifli has come forward with revelations after being suspended by the federation. This action followed his involvement in organising a tournament at a snooker centre in Pandan Indah, which apparently displeased the MSBF, leading them to demand payment.
Ithmayudin has also raised concerns about the MSBF’s practices, including the use of personal bank accounts for transactions rather than official association accounts. He pointed out issues such as unauthorised umpiring courses and the collection of entry fees ranging from RM300 to RM350.
Furthermore, Ithmayudin criticised the MSBF for not adhering to proper procedures, including discrepancies in the suspension process that he claims violated the federation’s constitution.
“My suspension was initially communicated verbally and via WhatsApp messages, without any official letter. According to the MSBF constitution, referees are not subject to the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the MSBF.
“Furthermore, when a letter was eventually issued, it did not specify the duration of my suspension. The President and Honorary Secretary only informed me that I was suspended for one year, but they did not indicate the start date or end date of the suspension,” said Ithmayudin to the media yesterday.
However, Ithmayudin has lodged a police report and also brought the issue up to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to ensure a thorough investigation.
He has also informed the Commissioner of Sports about the situation, but so far, he has yet to receive a response.
Ithmayudin notes that he is not alone in facing these issues, as many others, including players who have previously represented the country, have also been suspended by the MSBF.
“I urge the commissioner not to remain silent, as there are numerous issues within the MSBF. I call on the PJS to take action as well. My suspension has also affected my livelihood.
“What I hope to achieve with this revelation is to see the MSBF cleaned up. If possible, I also urge for a thorough overhaul of the officials within the federation for the betterment of snooker and billiards development in Malaysia,” he added. – September 10, 2024
