KUALA LUMPUR – The Jordanian national football team is not blind to the plight of the Palestinian people, affected by the ongoing war on Palestine.
However, emotions will have no place on the pitch when the two teams face each other tomorrow in the third round of the Group B match at the Asian World Cup 2026 qualifiers, taking place at the neutral Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jordan’s coach Jamal Sellami said: “As a person, it’s heartbreaking to witness what’s happening in Palestine. I feel deep sympathy for the people there.
“However, football requires us to set emotions aside. FIFA has taught us to respect all, and we respect Palestine, but tomorrow both teams will share a common goal to qualify for the World Cup.
“I’m confident we will play a fair and competitive match.”
Asian Cup runners-up Jordan are not planning to ease off on Palestine, especially after dropping two points in their opening match at home against Kuwait last week.
Despite dominating the game, Jordan conceded a late equaliser, leaving the match at 1-1.
Palestine, meanwhile, had an impressive start to their qualifiers – holding South Korea to a goalless draw in Seoul.
Jordan captain Noor Al Deen Al Rawabdeh, who plays for Selangor, acknowledged that Palestine may have a slight edge, despite the match being on neutral ground.
“The Palestinian team has been in Malaysia since their match against South Korea. They’ve had more time to adapt to the conditions here,” said Al Rawabdeh.
“However, this match is crucial for us, especially after dropping points against Kuwait. We hope to perform better and secure all three points tomorrow.”
In a separate statement, Sellami confirmed he would not be making any drastic changes to the squad or formation, despite the absence of star player Musa Al-Tamari.
Al-Tamari, who plays for French Ligue 1 side Montpellier, sustained an injury in the game against Kuwait.
“Our first XI remains the same. I don’t foresee any major changes.
“We may make a few adjustments to compensate for Al-Tamari’s absence, but nothing drastic,” Sellami added. – September 9, 2024
