BINTULU – Penang’s men’s sepak takraw team ended a 20-year-wait in spectacular fashion, capturing the gold in the team event at the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) by defeating Selangor 2-0 in a thrilling final at the Muhibbah Stadium here today.

Penang, showcasing a fresh lineup of young talent in this Sukma edition, swiftly took the lead through their Regu A, led by Danial Iman Hasbullah, downing their opponents in straight sets, 15-6, 15-9.

The victory was sealed by Penang’s Regu B, who delivered the match-winning point after defeating Selangor’s second regu, captained by Jefri Ahmad, also in straight sets 15-11, 15-12 and securing the long-awaited gold.

2022 edition gold medallists and early competition favourites Terengganu, meanwhile, took the bronze in the 3rd place playoff after defeating Melaka 2-1.

The sepak takraw competition, featuring eight gold medals across men’s and women’s events, is being held at the stadium here from August 14 to 23.

Penang head coach Mohamad Fazil Mohd Asri could not contain his joy over his boys’ win at finally ending the two-decade wait for the men’s team gold medal, describing it as a momentous victory that will be cherished for years to come.

“I’m incredibly proud of our 13 young players who performed exceptionally well. Only one of them had prior experience from the last Sukma.

“Most of these players have been training since their school days. We have a structured programme under the state sports council that nurtures them until they make it to the Sukma squad.

“It’s been a long journey, but it has all paid off with this success,” he told reporters after the final.

Penang Regu A tekong, Ikhwan Syafiq Mohamad Fitri, 20, said the team’s quest for gold doesn’t end here, as they now turn their focus to the regu category.

“I’m truly grateful for today’s victory. This win is also a testament to the guidance from our coaches (Mohamad Fazil and Abdul Rahimi Azizan) and the support from our teachers at the Mutiara Impian Sports School,” he said. – August 17, 2024
