KUALA LUMPUR – Mounir Nasraoui, 35, the father of Barcelona and Spanish winger Lamine Yamal, was reportedly stabbed early today in the Spanish town of Mataró, north-east of Barcelona.
According to a report by Spanish news outlet La Vanguardia, Nasraoui was stabbed in a parking lot and is currently receiving treatment at Can Ruti Hospital.
Nasraoui is believed to be in stable condition but remains under close observation. He is expected to stay hospitalised for a few days while his condition is being monitored.
The La Vanguardia report states that the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, is leading the investigation into the incident, with support from Mataró’s municipal police.
Police have arrested three men allegedly involved in the attack on Nasraoui and are currently searching for a fourth suspect.
Videos circulating on X show Nasraoui being restrained by police following what is believed to have been an altercation with several locals.
It is suspected that this argument escalated into the stabbing.
Yamal’s rise to stardom during the 2024 European Championships brought significant media attention to the forward and his family, especially after he scored on his debut, becoming Spain’s youngest player and goal scorer.
With just days to go before the La Liga season opener, Yamal was likely focused on preparing for the match. However, he now faces a tragic family emergency.
Nasraoui is no stranger to controversy, having previously faced legal issues for harassing a tent set up by the Spanish conservative party Vox in 2023. – August 15, 2024
