KUALA LUMPUR – The Paris Olympics, which officially started on Friday with an outdoor opening ceremony, is now on day three of competitions.

However, the Malaysian contingent is now left with 23 athletes from a total of 26 as three athletes – namely shooter Johnathan Wong Guanjie and swimmers Tan Rouxin and Khiew Hoe Yean – will come home early after falling to advance in their respective events.

National archery trio – Ariana Nur Dania Zairi, Syaqiera Mashayikh, and Nurul Azreena Fazil – were also knocked out in the women’s team 1/8 elimination round at the Invalides yesterday after they lost 5-3 to Indonesia in the team event. However, they will still compete in the individual events this week.

In shooting, Johnathan, who was making his second Olympic appearance after the 2016 Rio Games, could only manage a 26th-place finish out of 33 shooters in the men’s 10m pistol qualifying round. The Malaysian, with 570 points, had to be among the top eight to qualify for the final.

In swimming, Hoe Yean crashed out in the heats after clocking a time of three minutes and 51.66sec in the men’s 400m freestyle event, finishing 27th out of 37 swimmers.

Another national athlete, Rouxin, won her heat in the women’s 100m breaststroke, but her time of 1min 12.5sec was not enough to see her qualify for the top 16 semi-finals. – July 29, 2024
