KUALA LUMPUR – Despite internal financial struggles, Kuala Lumpur City FC is gearing up to take on arch-rivals Selangor FC in tonight’s Super League match.

The club’s financial woes came to a head when their skipper, Paulo Josue, revealed he has not been paid for seven months and is relying on his savings.

According to transfermarkt.com, the 35-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder, valued at RM1.39 million, typically earns between RM105,000 and RM110,000 monthly.

KL City and Selangor FC have faced off 33 times since 2007, with Selangor holding a slight edge with a 51.5% win rate.

Last season, Selangor triumphed 3-1 at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.

Ahead of tonight’s match, KL City’s new head coach Miroslav Kuljanac assured that the team remains focused despite the financial distractions.

“Everything is stable now,” Kuljanac said.

“Our CEO, Stanley Bernard, has addressed the financial issues, and our dressing room remains united.

“I have never seen any impact of the financial issues on the training of our players, as they have been giving their 100%.

“My main concern for now is injuries without our key players, but I believe we will give our best in any condition,” said Kuljanac when contacted.

KL City has been plagued by injuries since the start of their Super League campaign, with key players Kamal Azizi, Anwar Ibrahim, and Giancarlo Gallifuoco sidelined in their opener against Kuching City on May 12.

KL City FC holds fifth place in the Super League with four points from three matches. Selangor FC, led by Nidzam Jamil, stands second with nine points. – July 14, 2024
