KUALA LUMPUR – The organisers of the 113 Triathlon Desaru 2024, Eventure Global, admitted to making an error when announcing Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s third-place victory in the 113 category held last Sunday.
According to the competition format, all participants, including Syed Saddiq, who competed in this category, were required to complete three disciplines: 2km of swimming, 90km of cycling, and 21km of running.
However, in a joint statement issued last night with the Malaysia Triathlon Association, the organisers have acknowledged a technical error during Syed Saddiq’s cycling discipline.
“Due to an inadvertent course navigation error, YB Syed completed 72km instead of the full 90km cycling segment. This discrepancy was identified during our routine post-event data review.
“Following a constructive discussion with YB Syed and consultation with the Malaysian Triathlon Association Technical Committee, we have mutually agreed to amend his status to DNF (Did Not Finish).”
The organisers further added that Syed Saddiq has also agreed to return both his trophy and finisher medal to clarify matters.
“YB Syed has offered to return the third place trophy and finisher medal. We commend YB Syed for his sportsmanship and transparency throughout this process.
“The incident has highlighted areas where we can improve on, and are committed to improving our monitoring systems to ensure the accuracy and integrity of future competitions.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and support. Our focus remains on promoting health, fitness, and community through sports,” the organisers added.
The former youth and sports minister faced severe criticism yesterday, particularly from the triathlon community, for alleged dishonesty during the 113 Triathlon Desaru 2024.
He came under fire after initially being reluctant to disclose his running data from his smartwatch and bike computer.
However, organisers are also at fault for mishandling the situation, given that they had ample time before confirming Syed Saddiq’s victory and inviting him onto the stage to receive the trophy.
Last week, Syed Saddiq completed a 200km run from Muar to Parliament, raising a total contribution of RM160,000 aimed at supporting the Muar Service Centre to facilitate operations in aiding the people. – July 11, 2024
