KUALA LUMPUR – Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, has requested an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to address recent criticisms and penalties imposed on Selangor FC.

Speaking at the launch of the National Women’s League in Kuala Lumpur today, Hamidin acknowledged the sultan’s disappointment over his handling of the acid attack on Selangor FC striker Faisal Halim on May 5.

The sultan expressed discontent with Hamidin for not adequately addressing the issue and reminded him of his past service as the secretary-general of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) from 1995 to 2013, and of the honorary title awarded by His Majesty.

Hamidin explained that he had personally requested an audience with the sultan to clarify the situation.

“I have received word of regret from the Sultan of Selangor regarding the Malaysian Football League’s (MFL) decision.

“I contacted the palace yesterday to seek an audience, and today I have followed up with a letter to the sultan,” said Hamidin.

Yesterday, His Majesty expressed displeasure towards the MFL for imposing severe penalties on Selangor FC.

The MFL had imposed a RM100,000 fine on the Red Giants for their withdrawal from the Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on May 10.

In addition to the fine, the upcoming Super League match between Selangor and JDT will be played without spectators.

The MFL also announced further penalties, including a deduction of three points for Selangor in the 2024-2025 Super League season and compensation for losses incurred by JDT and MFL.

The decision was made despite His Majesty’s consent and full support for the squad’s choice to abstain from the match due to safety concerns following the attack on Faisal and threats against team CEO Johan Kamal Hamidon. – June 27, 2024
