KUALA LUMPUR – With just six months remaining until Petronas’ sponsorship ends, uncertainty looms over whether they will be renewing the partnership deal.

Despite extensive discussions, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has yet to receive a definitive decision from the oil and gas company regarding the continuation of their support.

This uncertainty comes at a crucial time as the Malaysia Open is set to take place in January 2025.

The tournament, a highlight on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour calendar and classified as a Super 1000 event, has been sponsored by Petronas since 2022.

The sponsorship of RM45 million by Petronas has significantly contributed to the tournament’s success and international recognition.

Petronas’ sponsorship is the biggest for BAM since its establishment.

BAM president, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, who will step down in August following the Paris Olympic Games, has been at the forefront of the discussions with Petronas.

“We are committed to securing the best possible future for Malaysian badminton. Our discussions with Petronas have been productive, and we remain hopeful for a positive outcome,” said Norza.

Despite Norza’s impending departure, BAM assures that the negotiations will continue without interruption, as the vice president and executive committee have taken up the mantle to ensure that the association’s objectives are met.

Petronas and its subsidiary, Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB), entered into a three-year sponsorship agreement with BAM, forming a partnership that has played a pivotal role in boosting Malaysian badminton.

The sponsorship, which began in 2022, has enhanced the training and preparation of national players, particularly in the lead-up to major international competitions such as the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Additionally, Petronas became the title sponsor of the Malaysia Open, renaming the event to Petronas Malaysia Open.

The Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) was rebranded as Petronas ABM under this agreement. – June 21, 2024
