KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun pulled off a major upset on the first day of the Indonesia Open by defeating world champions Seo Seung-jae and Kang Min-hyuk today.
The match, held at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, saw Wei Chong and Kai Wun trailing in the first set before staging a remarkable comeback to win 20-22, 21-16, 21-17.
This victory is especially significant for Wei Chong and Kai Wun, as they had previously lost to the world champions twice last year at the Malaysia Masters and the Korea Open.
Adding to the joy, this is the first time the Malaysians have advanced to the second round of a Super 1000-level tournament in the BWF calendar.
“We feel very happy because this is our first Super 1000 breakthrough, and we believe we played very well.
“We have competed in Super 1000 tournaments before, but often lost in the first round. We just wanted to give our best performance.
“During the match, we discussed strategies with our coaches, which helped clarify our mindset and understand our gameplay,” said Wei Chong.
They will face the winners of the match between the Danish pair, Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard, and the Chinese duo, Chen Boyang and Liu Yi, in the second round. – June 4, 2024
