KUALA LUMPUR — Amidst the triumph of Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair, Go Pei Kee and Low Yeen Yuan, in the opening round of the Malaysia Masters today, worries loom over Pei Kee’s fitness ahead of the anticipated second round on Thursday.
Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan secured their passage to the second round after defeating the Ukrainian duo, Polina Buhrova-Yevheniia Kantemyr, with a commanding scoreline of 21-15, 21-15 after a gruelling 36-minute encounter.
However, concerns arose within the Malaysian camp when Pei Kee suddenly complained of discomfort in her right knee, prompting immediate attention from the medical staff.
Although Pei Kee managed to continue the match and ended it with a victory, she admitted to enduring deep pain and uncertainty about the nature of her injury.
Adding to the concern, Pei Kee is slated to compete in the mixed doubles event alongside Choong Hon Jian, scheduled to face Wang Chan-Shin Seung Chan from South Korea in the first round tomorrow.
“I’m not sure about the extent of my injury. I don’t know how it happened; all I remember is feeling pain after the eleventh point, and then I felt unable to move.
“I’m not sure (about competing in the second round). I need to consult the physiotherapist first,” said Pei Kee after the match.
Based on the draw in the women’s doubles event, Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan are slated to compete against the eighth-seeded Australian pair, Angela Yu-Setyana Mapasa, in the upcoming second round. — May 21, 2024
