Malaysia Rugby refutes allegations by Sabah Rugby Union amid EGM walkout

Meeting called to present financial audits for 2021, 2022 saw 13 state affiliates agree to presentation, while Perlis, Kuala Lumpur objected, Sabah chose to walk out

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Rugby (MR) has strongly refuted allegations made by the Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) following the latter’s decision to withdraw from an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held in Kuala Lumpur today.

The EGM was convened to present financial audits for the years 2021 and 2022.

While 13 state affiliates agreed to the presentation of the audits, two states, Perlis and Kuala Lumpur, objected. Sabah, however, chose to walk out of the meeting, abstaining from voting.

Despite the acceptance of the audits by the 13 affiliates, it was contingent upon MR and the auditor providing detailed explanations for every expenditure within a week.

MR president Amir Amri Mohamad expressed regret over Sabah’s premature exit from the meeting, as they did not hear a full explanation from the audit team before making the drastic decision to leave the ongoing meeting.

“In regard to my position as president, as well as the positions of the other exco members, it’s important to note that decisions have already been made and communicated to the sports commissioner.

“There has been no objection from the sports commissioner regarding our appointment process.

“Therefore, there is no issue with this matter,” said Amri.

MR honorary secretary Fahmy Jalil responded to SRU’s dissatisfaction stemming from a breach of trust case within MR that has been unresolved for two years.

Over RM1 million reportedly disappeared without the knowledge of MR’s top management.

Suspects have been identified, and the police investigation is in its final stages, with preparations underway to bring the case to court.

Fahmy also addressed issues surrounding the EGM notice, which was supposed to be given within 14 days as per MR’s constitution.

“Our emails were delayed in reaching the affiliates, even though official letters were issued four days prior.

“We acknowledge our mistake and apologise to all affiliates. We conducted a vote among all on whether to proceed with this EGM or not, and the majority expressed their approval.

“The audit data presented was based on forensic audits and previous audits that had been manipulated by suspects.

“So, to say this data is false is incorrect because this is the only black-and-white information we have in our possession,” said Fahmy Jalil. – May 19, 2024
