KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s top badminton player, Lee Zii Jia, remains focused on reaching his peak performance despite successfully navigating through the challenges of the Thailand Open’s second round today.
At Bangkok’s Nimibutr Stadium, Zii Jia overcame his nerves to defeat South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin with scores of 22-20, 21-7, in a match that lasted 36 minutes.
Similar intensity was witnessed in yesterday’s first-round encounter against China’s Lei Lan Xi, where Zii Jia emerged victorious with scores of 21-17, 23-21, after a hard-fought battle.
“It was a tough first set, but I managed to regain my composure in the second set, which allowed me to execute my game plan effectively. I’m pleased with the win,” said Zii Jia in a post-match interview with SPOTV.
Zii Jia is now set to face another Chinese opponent, Lu Guang Zu, in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Despite winning four out of their six previous encounters, Zii Jia recalls his defeat to Guang Zu in the first round of the Malaysia Open in January.
“I’m still striving for my best performance. I’m hopeful that in the next five tournaments, I’ll achieve the level of play I’m aiming for,” he added.
Mixed results elsewhere in the tournament
In other matches, teammate Leong Jun Hao, who recently earned the title of fastest smasher in the Thomas Cup, faced a setback with a loss to home favourite Kunlavut Vitidsarn, with scores of 22-20, 14-21, 21-23.
The Malaysian squad’s journey in the mixed doubles event ended with Yap Roy King and Valeree Siow’s defeat to the tournament’s top seeds, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, 11-21, 16-21.
Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee also lost to Indonesian pair, Rehan Kusharjanto-Lisa Kusumawati, with a score of 15-21, 15-21.
However, Hon Jian redeemed his disappointment in the men’s doubles event by advancing to the quarter-finals with Haikal Nazri after defeating Pharanyu Kaosamaang-Worrapol Thongsa Nga, 21-17, 21-10.
Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King also delivered an impressive performance, defeating Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard from Denmark with scores of 21-14, 21-13. – May 16, 2024
