IPOH – National hockey midfielder Fitri Saari criticised his team for becoming overly excited and launching unnecessary attacks when they were leading their opening match against Pakistan at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup yesterday.
The Speedy Tigers started the game well by launching 16 attacks in the first 30 minutes. However, they lost their lead in the final quarters of the match – ultimately losing 5-4 against the world number 15 side.
The 31-year-old Fitri, who started the game in midfield, said that his team cannot afford to lose crucial matches in the tournament if they hope to defend the title they won in 2022.
“Playing in tournaments like this is tough, and we cannot afford to keep dropping points in the days to come. I think we got too excited when we were leading the game 4-3.
“We shouldn’t have launched too many attacks. Instead, we should have focused on defending and controlling our possessions.
“In my opinion, we should have only attacked when it was necessary.
“We need to evaluate our flaws in today’s game and ensure that we come back stronger than before. Most importantly, we need to consider what we can do better in our next match.
“We shouldn’t dwell too much on our defeat. We should bounce back in our next game against Canada,” said Fitri when interviewed after the game.
At the same time, Fitri also urged his young teammates to work on their stamina if they wish to remain competitive in the years to come.
“The young players need to buckle down and mature quickly as the game is getting faster every day.
“Hence, they need to push themselves to improve their stamina so that they can stay longer on the turf and reach their peak.
“If they need my guidance, I’m always here to help them,” Fitri added.
Fitri has scored 79 goals in 172 appearances since making his senior international debut in 2011. – May 5, 2024
