Conduct in-depth analysis before committing to Commonwealth Games bid: Faizal Azumu

He warns of potential negative economic consequences of hasty decision to host event without thorough consideration

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has suggested that the Youth and Sports Ministry conduct a thorough study, particularly on the return on investment, before deciding to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Faizal, who was the sports minister during Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, warned that a hasty decision by the current leadership could have negative consequences, particularly for the country’s economy.

Previously, the Commonwealth Games Federation offered Malaysia attractive incentives to host the sporting event, including financial aid of £100 million (RM602 million) and a £30 million exemption from hosting fees.

However, Faizal expressed concern about Malaysia’s ability to host the event within such a short period of time.

“High costs are acceptable when accompanied by high returns. However, it’s crucial to understand the anticipated income and benefits for the general public.

“For instance, if 100,000 athletes and sports officials from abroad attend the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia and spend their money within the country throughout the event, it will undoubtedly boost the local economy.

“But is the return worth the government’s expenditure?

“I suggest that the ministry establish a special committee to conduct a thorough study on this.

“In 1998, when we hosted the Commonwealth Games, we improved the country’s infrastructure and built airports, roads, stadiums, and more. We still benefit from those facilities until today.

“If we plan to host again, we need to upgrade and build additional facilities. However, will building these facilities provide a good return to the people in both the short and long term? I don’t believe so,” said Faizal when contacted by Scoop.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced today that she will present the proposal to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games for discussion in the cabinet meeting next week. – March 13, 2024
