KUALA LUMPUR – The national cycling squad started their campaign at the Asian Track Cycling Championships (ACC) in New Delhi with a bang after bagging two silver medals last night.

The medals were won in the men’s and women’s team sprint events.

The men’s trio of Muhammad Ridhwan Shahrom, Muhammad Fadhil Zonis and Umar Hasbullah clocked a time of 44.607s, losing out to defending champions Japan.

Yuta Obara, Kento Yamasaki and Minato Nakaishi registered a time of 44.367s in the final. India finished third to complete the podium.

Meanwhile, the women’s trio of Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, Anis Amira Rosidi, and Nur Aliana Syafika Azizan clocked a time of 50.095s in the final.

China’s Zhou Fei, Tong Mengqi and Wang Lijuan set a time of 48.178s for gold. South Korea completed the podium.

Commenting on his Instagram page, national track cycling high-performance director John Beasley expressed his pride in the women’s team, which showed marked improvement.

“Today was a great first day at the ACC in New Delhi.

“Our elite women’s trio finished second behind China, and the elite men won the silver medal, beaten by Japan.

“Coming second behind two cycling powerhouses has put me to bed with a smile on my face, proud of both of them.

“Also, the team behind them worked together wonderfully well. Thank you team, job well done,” said Beasley in the post.

Meanwhile, the national para-cyclists also performed brilliantly to win gold in the C1-5 mixed team sprint event. – February 22, 2024
