Malaysia Open: Se-young shrugs off favourite tag, focused on returning to form

South Korean star eases to win over China’s Zhang Yiman to make Super 1000 final

KUALA LUMPUR – World number one women’s singles shuttler An Se-young of South Korea is keeping her focus on getting her form back after an injury lay-off rather than winning the Malaysia Open.

In the semi-finals today, she eased to a win against Zhang Yiman of China 21-17, 21-11 in 36 minutes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

It is understood that last year’s runner-up is still recovering from a right knee injury sustained at the end of last year.

“I’m focusing more on the condition of my body and getting back into form. Winning the tournament would be good for me but it is not my priority right now.

“I feel like it would take me some time to get back to 100%,” said the 21-year-old.

In the final tomorrow she will take on Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-ying, who is chasing her fifth Malaysia Open title.

In today’s semi-final, the former world number one defeated reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei 17-21, 21-15, 21-18.

Se-young said that on current form she was not the favourite for the title tomorrow.

“Tzu-ying is a great player and I always try to keep up with the top players but, on current form, I’m not really there so I will just focus on my game,” said Se-young. – January 13, 2024
