KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s challenge at the Malaysia Open has ended after men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik were defeated in the quarter-finals today.

They went down to reigning world champions Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae from South Korea 16-21, 21-18, 21-13 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

After claiming the first set, the world number four pair admitted to getting overexcited in the second set as they rushed to win it.

In the third set, the 2022 world champions held a two point lead at 10-8 before the South Koreans strung eight points in a row.

“We started well but in the second game, we got overexcited. We wanted to win badly but we lost our focus,” said Aaron.

Wooi Yik added that there were moments when they failed to hold their composure.

“The Koreans were more focused and confident. They controlled the game and put us under pressure,” he said.

Aaron and Wooi Yik will next head to the India Open on Tuesday where they have been drawn to face Japanese pair Akira Koga and Taichi Saito. – January 12, 2024
