KUALA LUMPUR – National hockey forward Faizal Saari is rallying his teammates to fulfil Malaysia’s more than two-decade-long dream of participating in the Olympic Games by securing their spot at this year’s edition in Paris.

The 32-year-old, who has scored 176 goals in 226 appearances since making his senior debut in 2009, was not named in head coach Arul Selvaraj’s 18-player list for the Olympic qualifiers in Muscat, Oman, taking place from January 13 to 21.

The veteran forward was sidelined due to a lingering gout injury, sustained during the Hangzhou Asian Games match against Pakistan in September last year.

Speaking to Scoop, Faizal said that he was currently focusing on his rehabilitation and would vie for his place after his recovery.

“I will work harder to be a part of the team once I’m fully fit. For now, I have to respect the coach’s decision and I don’t want to go against it.

“The team looks young and fresh, and I would like them to carry my passion and desire to ensure that we accomplish our long-time dream of playing in the Olympics.

“I have been with the Speedy Tigers for a very long time now, exactly 15 years, so it’s now time for the youngsters to take centre stage and play with full commitment and desire for the country.

“I wish the best for the team,” said Faizal.

Arul’s team will play two friendlies, facing off against Canada on January 12 and Chile on January 13 in Oman.

Grouped with Great Britain, Pakistan and China in Pool A, the Speedy Tigers currently hold the 12th position in the world rankings with 1,881.87 points. – January 11, 2024
