The dynamic striker – who has scored 124 goals in 304 appearances for the Red Lions since making his debut in 2012 – has not only created a legacy for himself but has also been inspiring young Belgium attackers like Louis Depelsenaire to follow his footsteps.

Speaking to Scoop, Louis said that he looks up to his idol and hopes to be as successful as his compatriot on the international stage.

“Since I was young, I have always wanted to represent my nation, and Tom is a player that I have always adored.

“I always wanted to replicate his success, such as winning the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo and the 2018 FIH Men’s World Cup.

“I grew up watching his games on television, and I even used to go to the stadium to analyse his gameplay and take notes on it so that I could improve my game.

“Without looking up to him, I don’t think I would have even reached this level in my career, and I’m even proud of myself that I can play in the same Belgian League as my idol,” said the 21-year-old striker who plays for Waterloo Duck HC.

Louis, who opened his goal-scoring account in the opening group match against New Zealand at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup today, said he enjoys the atmosphere of the tournament.

He expressed his desire to see his team progress with the aim of clinching the title.

“This is my debut in the World Cup, and I’m happy to score my first goal in this tournament.

“I’m grateful to my coach, Jeroen Baart, for trusting me and selecting me to be part of this prestigious tournament.

“This is just the start for me, and I have the hunger to play for the senior team one day.

“I aim to take this opportunity to repay my coach with my consistent performance and hopefully bring this tournament back to Brussels,” Louis added.

Belgium defeated New Zealand 4-0 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Belgium took the lead in the 18th minute, through Hugo Labouchere with a penalty shot, while Jack Vloeberghs dribbled past three New Zealand defenders to score in the penalty box in the 19th minute.

The junior Red Lions’ other two goals were scored by Louis (21st) and Thomas Crols (34th). – December 6, 2023
