KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian track star Mandy Goh Li remains unwavering in her determination to don the national colours once more and secure a spot at international multi-sports events.

The 22-year-old, who last competed for Malaysia at the 2019 SEA Games in Cambodia in the 4x400m, is steadfast in her commitment to addressing her weaknesses and enhancing her chances of national team selection.

Despite facing challenges, Mandy expressed her dedication to improvement, acknowledging the need for consistency in her endurance.

“I have been performing well and winning many tournaments for the past few months, but I believe that I lack consistency in my endurance.

“This is something that I need to improve, and I’m capable of rectifying my flaws as fast as I can,” she told Scoop.

While she missed the opportunity to compete in the Hangzhou Asian Games, Mandy is resolute in her pursuit of representing Malaysia.

Currently not a national athlete, she is determined to push herself in various tournaments, eyeing success at the upcoming Asean University Games in Surabaya.

In the 20th edition of Sukma held in September last year, Mandy showcased her prowess by winning gold in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01s.

At the Varsity Track and Field Championships at the UM Arena in Universiti Malaya yesterday, she clinched another gold in the 4x400m but expressed dissatisfaction with her performance, falling short of her target time.

Representing Universiti Putra Malaysia, Mandy finished first with a time of 3:46s.

While not entirely content, her determination to excel remains resolute.

“I wanted to break the record and complete the race in less than three minutes, but I failed to do it despite giving my 100%.

“However, I’m not going to allow my disappointment to consume my desire and hunger to do better,” Mandy said when met at the event.

With silver-medallist Wong Siew Kien of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak finishing in 3:57s and bronze-winner Nur Nasyatul Nadia of International Islamic University Malaysia clocking a time of 4:01s, Mandy’s competitive spirit and aspiration to set records in her category continue to drive her forward. – November 19, 2023
