KUALA LUMPUR – National discus thrower Queenie Ting Kung Ni was in a league of her own today at the Grand Finals of the Varsity Track and Field Championships, leaving her closest competitor trailing by 4.64m.

The 26-year-old recorded four complete throws out of six at the event at the UM Arena in Universiti Malaya. Her four throws’ distances were 41.25m, 39.35m, 40.49m, and her best was 41.29m.

In comparison, silver medallist Nani Sahirah Maryata – representing Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) – had a best throw of 36.65m.

Nor Syazwani Rosman, representing Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, completed the podium by finishing third with a best throw of 33.84m.

Queenie said she took it easy as it is currently her off-season.

“I am in my off-season, so for this competition, I didn’t really train for it.

“I have been off for a month, but I still competed today to represent UPM.

“I also wanted to fulfil my obligation for this year, and I am happy to be able to defend the gold for UPM,” she said.

Queenie added that she is recovering from an injury suffered before the Hangzhou Asian Games.

“For this grand final, I didn’t set any targets to break records because after the Asian Games, my coach gave me an off-season so I could recover from an injury.

“I injured my hamstring before the Asian Games but it is now getting better.

“I am confident that I will recover before next year,” she told reporters after the final today. – November 17, 2023
