KUALA LUMPUR – The National Sports Council (NSC) has appointed Abdul Rashid Yaakub, formerly the deputy director-general in management, as its new director-general, effective immediately.

This announcement comes as a replacement for the retired Datuk Ahmad Shapawi, who officially retired on September 28.

With an illustrious 35-year tenure at the NSC, Rashid holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

His journey within the council began in July 1988 as the head of the Finance Unit, where he served until 2002.

Subsequently, he undertook roles as the Finance Branch director (2003-2006), Management Services Division director (2007-2017), Corporate Division director (2018-2019), and, most recently, as the deputy director-general (management) from 2020. Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Rashid acknowledged the stakeholders responsible for his appointment and pledged to leverage his extensive experience to lead the NSC effectively.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the Youth and Sports Ministry, and the NSC board of directors for entrusting me with the role of director-general.

“God willing, I aim to collaboratively evaluate and implement necessary changes while upholding and enhancing the positive aspects to further advance the nation’s sporting performance,” Rashid conveyed in a video message shared with the media.

He also appealed to NSC members for their support and guidance in his new capacity, emphasising the importance of collective effort and shared expertise to steer the NSC toward its goals. – November 1, 2023
