KUALA LUMPUR – National coaching director Rexy Mainaky was moved by his proteges’ triumphant performance at the Denmark Open last night.

Speaking to Scoop, Rexy could not hide his emotions as he expressed his immense pride in the achievement of Malaysia’s top men’s doubles duo, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who secured their first World Tour title since their partnership began in 2017.

Rexy, who assumed the role of coaching director at Akademi Badminton Malaysia on September 27, commended the fourth-ranked pair for their exceptional display of composure on the court.

“Aaron and Wooi Yik remained very calm throughout the match, refusing to succumb to the pressure of the final.

“They truly relished the game, stepping onto the court and playing with an instinctive, unrestrained style.

“This victory not only showcased their skills but also tested and affirmed their self-confidence,” he said while holding back his tears.

Aaron-Wooi Yik made a significant breakthrough at the Super 750 event, overpowering Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana 21-13, 21-17 in just 32 minutes.

In a brief post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation, Aaron said they will “take some time to celebrate this win” before heading to the French Open on Tuesday.

The duo are drawn in the bottom half of the bracket and are scheduled to face Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin in the opening round. – October 23, 2023
