KUALA LUMPUR – A participant in the Langkawi Ironman race passed away in the hospital today, following a near-drowning incident during the race that took place yesterday.
Ironman Malaysia has since issued a statement expressing their deep sadness over the loss of Muhaini Mahmud.
It was believed that Muhaini Mahmud found herself in distress approximately 300m from completing the swim leg of the competition.
The swim safety personnel then responded by providing urgent medical support before the 44-year-old athlete was transported to a nearby hospital to continue receiving medical care.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of a race participant at Saturday’s Ironman 70.3 Langkawi.
“Despite the best medical efforts, the athlete sadly passed away today.”
The statement also conveyed Ironman Malaysia’s condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the athlete.
It highlighted the ongoing commitment of the organisation to provide support and assistance to Muhaini’s grieving family during this incredibly challenging time.
