KUALA LUMPUR – Sailor Asnawi Iqbal Adam presented the first medal for the Malaysian contingent today at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

In the final series of the ILCA 4 race, the 17-year-old, making his Asiad debut, claimed the bronze medal after accumulating 42 points.

The gold medal went to Thailand’s Weka Bhanubandh, who secured 13 points, while Singapore’s Isaac Goh, who scored 21 points, took home the silver.

“I am both proud and pleasantly surprised by this accomplishment. It marks the pinnacle of my achievements, and I never anticipated being the one to secure the first medal for our contingent.

“When comparing my performance to other athletes, there’s still a significant gap in standards because many of them train in Europe, whereas I’ve been training in Langkawi.

“Up to this point, my preparation and training have been strong, but there’s always room for improvement.

“If I have the opportunity to train overseas in Europe, it would undoubtedly greatly enhance my performance,” he said.

In the women’s windsurfing RS:X category, Tengku Nurani Ezaty Tengku Khairudeen secured a second bronze medal for Malaysia with a score of 20 points after completing 6 laps.

Thailand’s Kaewduang Ngam Siripon clinched the gold medal in the category, earning six points.

Ngai Wai Yan from Hong Kong won the silver medal with 12 points, while India’s Ganesh Ishwariya finished fourth with 22 points, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal. — September 26, 2023
