KUALA LUMPUR — Ong Yew Sin remains resolute in his pursuit of excellence, undeterred by the demanding schedule leading up to the Asian Games.

The independent men’s doubles shuttler, backed by his rigorous training regimen, is confident that his commitment will bear fruit on the grand stage in Hangzhou.

“I’ve been working closely with my coach to ensure I’m in peak condition.

“The Asian Games is a significant event, and I want to make Malaysia proud,” said Yew Sin, acknowledging the physical toll of the busy tournament schedule.

The 28-year-old added he aims to overcome recent performance setbacks alongside partner Teo Ee Yi and mentor budding talents.

“Our form is not so great coming into these Asian Games. We didn’t play very well in the Hong Kong Open, and we aim to learn from our mistakes and move forward.

“Coming back to train at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) is always good because this is where it all started for us.

“We are all in high spirits, and as a pair, we will give our 100% for our Malaysian team and guide the youngsters ahead of the games,” he said when met during training at ABM in Bukit Kiara, here today.

The badminton squad started their centralised training today at ABM until Saturday in preparation for the Games in Hangzhou.

Meanwhile, independent coach Rosman Razak also lauded the unity within the Malaysian camp, vowing to leverage his expertise to elevate their performance at the Asian Games.

“The atmosphere within the team is great, and we would like to maintain this momentum ahead of the games.

“I also admire the commitment shown by the players, and they are not segregating themselves as independent or BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) players.

“We are united to represent Malaysia,” he said.

Rosman also coaches mixed doubles Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai.

He added that while they emphasise the significance of accumulating Olympic qualification points, currently, the players are solely concentrating on their national responsibilities, with plans to address Olympic qualification after the Asian Games.

The men’s team will take to the courts on September 28, while the men’s doubles competition is set to kick off on October 2. — September 19, 2023
