KUALA LUMPUR – E. Elavarasan has quit as Harimau Muda head coach after successfully helping the team qualify for the Under-23 Asian Cup next year.
According to a statement today, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has reached a mutual understanding with Elavarasan, allowing him to concentrate on his duties with Harimau Malaya while making room for others to take on the responsibility for the 2024 U-23 AFC Championship in April.
He will now shift his focus to his role as an assistant coach with the senior team under Kim Pan-gon.
Elavarasan was appointed as the head coach of the national U23 squad in September last year, replacing Brad Maloney.
Under his guidance, Harimau Muda won the 2023 Merlion Cup in Singapore in March and also advanced to the semi-finals of last month’s 2023 AFF U23 Championship in Rayong, Thailand.
However, the coach recently faced criticism from fans for his team’s tactical approach in the qualifiers, prompting calls for his resignation.
FAM is expected to announce his replacement later. – September 18, 2023
