KUALA LUMPUR — Former national junior development director Datuk Misbun Sidek has expressed his enduring passion for badminton, despite his recent departure from the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) following a decision by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in August.

In a heartfelt statement shared on his Facebook page today, Misbun expressed his belief that the decision to step down from his role as the head of youth development at ABM was in the best interest of both parties.

“Behind every success, there is a challenge that needs to be faced with patience and sincerity,” said Misbun.

“Although I feel sadness and disappointment, this decision is the best for both parties. My love for badminton never faded.”

He also reaffirmed his commitment to the future of Malaysian badminton and his hope for the emergence of new talents.

“Planning for the progress of our country’s badminton remains my top priority. I aspire to see more Malaysian badminton stars born in the future,” he added.

The 63-year-old Thomas Cup veteran expressed his gratitude to BAM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, describing him as an exceptional individual who had provided him with the space, opportunities, and trust to fulfil his responsibilities within the organisation.

Misbun also offered an apology for any mistakes or oversights during his tenure at the national governing body and extended his gratitude to the team for their support.

“I pray for your continued success in the future,” he concluded.

Last month, BAM announced Misbun’s departure after disappointing results by his players at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

There was initially a misunderstanding regarding the termination of his contract, with Norza offering an extension until the end of the year.

However, Misbun ultimately decided to part ways with BAM for good, and the matter was considered closed.

In 1996, Misbun and his brothers established the professional badminton club Nusa Mahsuri with the aim of discovering new talents.

Currently, Misbun will continue managing the club while considering offers from abroad.

He has hinted at receiving at least five offers from neighbouring countries, believed to be Thailand and Singapore. — September 8, 2023.
