KUALA LUMPUR — The Super League match between neighbouring rivals Kedah and Penang turned ugly following its conclusion as dozens of supporters from both sides engaged in fracas at a Shell station within the vicinity of the Bandaraya stadium at George Town, Penang, last night.

The match which saw Kedah emerged victorious with a 2-1 win against the home side, may have triggered the altercation between the rival football clubs.

A video posted on social media captured the scene, showing hundreds of supporters from both teams confronting each other. The fracas resulted in heavy traffic and yet to be estimated damage to the petrol station.

The 59-second video showed both sets of fans engaging in the brawl whilst hurling helmets and other unidentified objects at each other.

However, as the police arrived at the scene, the crowd began to disperse. Several troublemakers were also seen being apprehended by the authorities.

Meanwhile, the match between both teams was a feisty affair, as the referee booked seven players and sent off Penang’s Muhammad Adib Abdul Ra’op in the 76th minute.

Kedah took all three points when Moses Atede scored the winner in extra time.

The victory sees Kedah sitting in third place in the standings with 43 points after 20 matches, closing the gap with second-place Selangor by three points.

At the same time, Penang remained in 10th place with 19 points from 20 matches. — August 23, 2023
