KUALA LUMPUR – 53-year-old American actress Shannen Doherty died, succumbing to breast cancer after fighting for seven years.
Her long-time publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed Doherty’s death with People magazine today.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
The actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, but revealed that the disease returned two years later.
Even though she was aware that she was in stage 4, she kept working on the 90210 reboot in honour of her castmate Luke Perry, who died of a massive stroke in March 2019.
She reportedly said working on the reboot was the least she could do to remember her friend and to prove that she could still work despite her diagnosis.
Doherty hit stardom as Brenda Walsh on the original Beverly Hills, 90210, which premiered in 1990.
In Charmed, she played Prue Halliwell, the oldest of three witch sisters. She left the show in 2001.
In 2019, Doherty signed up for the 90210 reboot, playing the same character that made her famous. – July 14, 2024
