KUALA LUMPUR — The former aide of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has quit all his posts in DAP and also withdrawn from the party’s election for top leaders this Sunday over due to his involvement in an ongoing corruption investigation.
Edmund Teoh, who was Federal Territories DAP publicity secretary, announce his decision in a statement today reported by various media.
He also denied any wrongdoing in relation to the probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into the procurement of smart boards and smart TVs for schools at inflated pricing using funds for the Seputeh constituency.
“To uphold the party’s reputation and to prevent being portrayed as a false adversary, I have made the difficult but necessary decision, out of love and loyalty to the party.
“With immediate effect, I am withdrawing from the party’s central executive committee (CEC) contest scheduled for Sunday and resigning from all positions I hold within the party. This decision is made in the best interest of all parties involved, and I stand by it with conviction and integrity,” Teoh said in his statement.
Denying the allegations against him, he called them “baseless, politically motivated, and entirely without merit”.
He also reaffirmed his support for Kok, saying that he had always followed her instructions throughout his years of service until his resignation in November last year.
On March 6, Teoh and another former staff – Ng Yoot Kuen – were summoned for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. Ng was released while Teoh was arrested and remanded for four days.
The sum allegedly involved was RM1.5 million allocation for the supply of smart boards to 16 schools, over which Teoh was investigated on suspicion of soliciting and receiving a RM500,000 bribe.
Kok has denied approving the allocation, and said her own checks found that the pricing was highly inflated. She even raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 14 last year.
On her former aide’s remand, she said MACC’s independence to carry out its investigation had to be respected. She also said she was prepared to be questioned by the agency and to give it her full cooperation. – March 14, 2025
