KUALA LUMPUR Datuk Lee Chong Wei is set to meet the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, next week to discuss his appointment as one of the ambassadors for the state’s sports development, specifically in badminton.

Tunku Ismail made the announcement on Wednesday during a Q&A session with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) supporters in Johor Bahru. The move is seen as part of his broader efforts to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem.

Chong Wei, a former world number one men’s singles player, expressed his gratitude for the appointment, saying he was deeply honoured and humbled by the trust placed in him.

“His Royal Highness’s unwavering passion for the sport and dedication to its growth is truly inspiring. I share the same commitment and will give my utmost to contribute to the development of badminton in Johor and beyond,” he said in a statement.

Speaking to Scoop separately, Chong Wei reiterated his appreciation for the role.

“I feel very honoured, and I will be meeting Tunku next week to discuss my role further,” he said.

The 41-year-old, who retired in 2019 after a battle with nose cancer, remains one of Malaysia’s most celebrated athletes.

A three-time Olympic silver medallist, Chong Wei also holds the record for the longest reign as world number one in men’s singles badminton, for a total of 349 weeks. – March 13, 2025
