KUALA LUMPUR – A top official from the Johor Hockey Association (JHA) has been remanded for five days by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as part of an investigation into abuse of power and misappropriation of RM26,603.44 for personal use.
According to sources within the hockey fraternity, the funds in question were part of a RM1.3 million allocation provided by the Johor State Sports Council (MSNJ) for the financing of activities by the state hockey association, including the renowned Sultan of Johor Cup for the years 2023-2025.
The source also revealed that JHA’s former secretary-general, who is currently the manager of the state’s Sukma hockey team, has also been arrested for submitting false documents regarding the association’s financial reports.
“Both of them have been arrested for embezzling JHA funds for personal use which were allocated for 2023-2025. MACC identified a loophole after receiving reports indicating that many of the funds allocated by MSNJ were never efficiently used, apart from the Johor Cup over the years.
“RM15,000, which was intended for a training camp for state hockey athletes in 2023, was misappropriated and used for personal expenses, while RM11,603.44, allocated for equipment subsidies for the state men’s Sukma team, was also misused.
“The claims were submitted to MSNJ, despite none of the development programmes and other hockey-related activities in the state being carried out over the past few years.
“The case will be investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, and the suspects have been arrested for interrogation until next Tuesday,” said the source.

Meanwhile, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Sections 23 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009. – February 13, 2025
