SHAH ALAM – Thrill-seekers and adventure enthusiasts, both local and international, need look no further than the SkyCity Tower glass water slide – Malaysia’s first of its kind – for an adrenaline-filled experience.

Situated in the lively i-City Theme Park in Shah Alam, just a 48-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur, this unique attraction blends excitement, technology, and breathtaking views in a way never seen before.

The RM15 million project aims to draw local and international visitors, boosting Shah Alam and Selangor’s tourism sector.

It is projected to attract five million visitors this year, playing a pivotal role in the Visit Selangor 2025 initiative, which targets seven million tourists.

However, during a visit by Scoop, some locals shared their concerns about safety, questioning the long-term sustainability of the glass structure.

Speaking to Scoop, Ahmad Nasaruddin said that he feels the water slide boat is unsafe and is too small and tight for users.

“It’s also not safe as it doesn’t have any seatbelts or proper protections, and the boat only depends on a few strings for us to hold onto. If we don’t hold the strings tightly, there’s a high possibility that we could fall off the slide.

“The glass barriers on the sides are also too low, and if our body weight keeps hitting them, they might crack over time. This is definitely a good effort, but it would be better if they upgraded the safety elements to prevent potential accidents,” Ahmad warned.

At the same time, Khairy Muhaimeen, who visited the premises with his family, said that the water in the glass slide was too fast, and he was very concerned about the safety of his children.

“I was looking for a place to take my kids during the school holidays and came across this location while scrolling through social media. The place looked fun and thrilling, and my kids enjoyed it as the experience they had was unlike anything they had experienced before.

“However, the water in the glass slide was too fast, and as a father, I was worried for my children’s safety. I kept praying that an accident wouldn’t happen to them.

“My kids don’t know how to swim, and if they had fallen into the fast-moving water, there was a high possibility they could have drowned.

“Throughout the five-minute journey in the glass slide, I had no choice but to hold my kids tight, fearing that they might fall into the water. But overall, my kids enjoyed it. If only they could reduce the speed of the water, this place would be recommendable for everyone to visit,” said Khairy.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Rahim, who travelled from Seremban with his family to experience the water slide, said he was impressed with the security measures in place but was not happy with the price or the infrastructure.

“To be fair, I recently visited Bangi Wonderland with my family, and the slide there wasn’t as enjoyable as the one we experienced at the SkyCity Tower glass water slide. Here, it was much more entertaining and the crowd was larger compared to what I’ve experienced at other places.

“But the price is too expensive for locals just to use the water slide and I feel it’s not very worthwhile. The most concerning part was when we got to the top floor for the glass slide ride, we could feel that the infrastructure was shaking and wasn’t very stable.

“Maybe this is because the place is overcrowded with people, and the infrastructure isn’t stable enough to accommodate so many visitors.

“If these issues aren’t addressed, I wouldn’t be surprised if the infrastructure were to collapse one day. However, the operating hours were great, and the timing was perfect for families to visit,” Iskandar said.

These concerns gained traction after a TikTok video went viral last week, allegedly showing a crack in the slide.

However, the i-City Theme Park management refuted the claim, clarifying that the apparent “crack” was actually an LED wire.

Tickets for the glass water slide are priced at RM45 for Malaysian adults, with discounted rates of RM35 for children and senior citizens. A combo deal for one adult and one child is available for RM75.

For international visitors, tickets are RM55 for adults and RM45 for children and seniors, with a combo deal at RM95.

i-City has also introduced the i-City SuperApp, enabling cashless transactions and AI-powered hands-free parking for a seamless experience. – January 28, 2025
