CHUKAI — A social media influencer has been arrested for allegedly uploading a threatening post related to the assault of a man with disabilities at a market in Kemanan, Terengganu.
The suspect is a 36-year-old man who was arrested at a hotel in Segamat, Johor, at around 6.55 am today, acting Kemaman police chief DSP Wan Muhamad Wan Ja’afar said, according to Bernama.
He added that the suspect has been remanded until tomorrow for further investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or services.
“We received a report on Jan 23 from a man who informed us about a threatening post related to the assault case that was uploaded on the influencer’s social media account,” said the acting police chief.
The assault of Ahmad Nor Al Faizan Jusoh, 47, took place at the Padang Astaka Chukai Farmers’ Market on Jan 17 after the victim allegedly rode his motorcycle into one of the stalls by accident.
The incident came to light after a viral video of his assault was shared widely, in which the victim is seen repeatedly apologising while the men who assault him are kick him in the head and throw fried noodles at him, before taking him by the arms and dragging him on the road.
A friend of the victim said he had been an exemplary student in his youth and a top hockey player in the state, but suffered mental health issues after leaving school.
Police have arrested four men to date over the assault.
Meanwhile, although police have wrapped up investigations and submitted the papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), charges cannot be proffered until a medical report on the victim’s case is completed.
Terengganu State Housing, Health and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the victim is under observation at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah and in stable condition.
However, the hospital has yet to complete its medical report on the victim that is needed by the prosecution before pressing charges over the assault case.
“As of yesterday, I was in contact with the hospital … there is still no specific date for completing the victim’s medical report,” Bernama reported him saying.
Previously, acting Kemaman police chief Wan Muhamad said the investigation papers for the case had been referred to the AGC but were returned by the Deputy Public Prosecutor, who requested a complete medical report on the victim. – January 26, 2025
