KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din has been reappointed as chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), extending his tenure for another two years, effective March 1 next year.
It was reported that the decision to extend Salim’s tenure, previously set to end on February 28, was made yesterday by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Salim initially assumed the role of MCMC chairman on March 1, 2023. Before that, he served as an MCMC board member and was the interim chairman from June to December 2022.
Under his leadership, MCMC delivered its strongest financial performance to date. The commission recorded a net income of RM1.13 billion in 2023, a remarkable 38% jump from RM820.6 million in 2022.
Operational expenditure was also significantly reduced, dropping 21% from RM524.8 million in 2022 to RM412.7 million last year, showcasing more efficient resource management.
MCMC, under Salim’s guidance, also undertook strategic agreements with firms such as the Korea Internet and Security Agency, Blackberry Limited and Microsoft Malaysia.
The cooperative efforts are aimed at, among others, strengthen developments in Malaysia’s cybersecurity and artificial intelligence landscape.
Prior to his appointment as MCMC chairman last year, the 65-year-old was also a member of the consultation and corruption prevention panel under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, as well as the executive vice-chairman of Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB).
He was also reportedly the founder and group managing director of Gapurna Sdn Bhd prior to his stint in MRCB, having held non-executive chairmanships at Giant Malaysia and British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd, as well as having chaired the Malaysia-Pakistan Business Council.
In November, Salim was appointed as an adjunct professor at the Multimedia University for a two-year period, highlighting his extensive experience as well as significant contributions to the communications and multimedia sector. – December 17, 2024
