Floods: PM freezes ministers’ leave, tells them to be on-ground to help victims ASAP

This comes after almost 87,000 victims from nine states were displaced due to worsening water levels

KUALA LUMPUR – The leave of all cabinet members has been frozen in light of the ongoing flood disaster across the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also instructed them to immediately be on the ground to assist. 

“All ministers are to continue their duties now. Go, yes, (leave is frozen).

“Immediately, immediately (head to the field),” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Pudina, Precinct 17, in Putrajaya today. 

As of 2.55pm, 86,499 flood victims from 26,593 families have been affected in nine states: Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan. 

According to the Info Bencana portal of the Social Welfare Department, Kelantan recorded the highest number of victims, with 64,937 individuals from 20,207 families across 10 districts. They have been placed in 239 temporary relief centres that were recently opened. 

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a continuous rain warning affecting eight states: Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Johor, until tomorrow. 

In a statement today, MetMalaysia warned that hazardous levels of heavy rainfall are expected in Kelantan, particularly in Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh, and Kuala Krai, as well as in Terengganu. 

Perak (Hulu Perak), Kelantan (Gua Musang), and Pahang (Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin) are predicted to experience severe continuous rain during the same period. 

Moderate continuous rainfall is expected in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, and Kampar), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, and Bera), and Johor (Segamat, Mersing, and Kota Tinggi). – November 29, 2024
