KUALA LUMPUR — TikTok is now the newest member of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF) under the recently introduced category of ‘Technology, Media, and Digital Service Providers’.
CMCF announced TikTok’s membership today, noting that it marked the first time a short-form mobile video platform is a member.
TikTok’s admission follows amendments to CMCF’s constitution earlier this year to include such providers, it said in a statement today.
“As a leading platform with a diverse global user base, TikTok will offer valuable insights into the evolving digital landscape, enabling CMCF to further strengthen its role in consumer protection and content self-regulation.
“TikTok will collaborate with CMCF and pave the way for collaborative efforts in policy-making, industry standard setting, and the continued promotion of a safer, more equitable media landscape in Malaysia,” the infantry forum added.
Meanwhile, CMCF Chairman Rafiq Razali said TikTok’s inclusion is a step forward in shaping industry policies and in ensuring content responsibility.
“(It will) enhance trust in the digital space for the benefit of consumers across Malaysia,” Rafiq said.
CMCF Chief Executive Officer Mediha Mahmood also said other digital platforms are welcomed.
“Their participation ensures our content policies align with international best practices, comply with Malaysia’s laws, and meet the unique needs of our community,” she said. –
CMCF, which is under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is designated by the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to oversee and promote self-regulation of content over the electronic networked medium.
Its membership includes key players in the content industry, such as advertisers, advertising agencies, broadcasters, content creators/distributors, audiotext hosting service providers, advertising agencies, internet service providers, and civil society groups. – November 25, 2024
